SSSP DISABILITY DIVISION 2021 MEETING MINUTES

Meeting Minutes:
1) Introductions
a) Thank you to Kate Caldwell as outgoing chair! 
b) Welcome to:
i) Catherine Voulgarides (CUNY) as incoming chair!
ii) Asha Rao (UIC) will be continuing on as grad student in charge of newsletters
2) Planning for next year’s conference in Las Angeles
a) Theme: “The Sociological Reimagination: From Moments to Momentum”
b) Session planning & finding organizers
i) Proposed co-sponsored sessions with the following divisions: 
(1) Labor Studies
(2) Gender (Suggested title, “Feminist Disability Studies: New Challenges and Opportunities”; Alan Martino and Tiffany Boulton organizing)
(3) Family (Suggested topic related to interdependence; Sara Green offered to organize)
(4) Drinking and Drugs (Suggested topic related to opioids, chronic pain and disability; Loren Wilbers offered to organize)
(5)  Educational Problems (Suggested topic related to teaching justice issues amid controversy over critical race theory)
(6) Environment & Technology (Laura Mauldin offered to organize)
(7) Racial and Ethnic Minorities
(8) Health, Health Policy & Health Services
c) Division reception planning
i) Discussed reaching out to the ASA Disability & Society section about organizing a joint reception, along with a local disability organization.
3) SSSP blog proposal discussion
a) Members in attendance agreed this may be a good tool for outreach and growing the division.
4) Open forum for other items of interest to the division
a) Discussion of accessibility issues at the fully in-person meeting and how the lack of a virtual option may affect potential panelists who are unable to travel. Agreed to be in touch with the Accessibility Committee regarding this concern.
