SSSP 2022 DIVISION MEETING AGENDA Annual Meeting, Los Angeles, Omni Hotel 4:30 – 6:30 PM, Bunker Hill 1) Volunteer to take notes? a) Loren Wilbers volunteered to take notes 2) Attendance a) 5 members in attendance (signed attendance sheet) 3) Welcome Alan as incoming chair! a) Applause for Alan :) b) Reminder to solicit nominations for next incoming co-chair in the fall 4) This year’s turnout a) Began with 10 sessions and had fewer papers submitted than previous years, then reduced to 3 total sessions after cancellations (likely COVID and $ related) b) Desire for virtual attendance option in the future? i) Ask the members for their input – should we advocate for hybrid/virtual in the future? ii) Perhaps collaborate with Accessibility Committee on this issue 5) Budget overview: a) Approved for 2023: $600 total i) $150 for student paper award ii) $200 for disability division reception iii) $150 newsletter editor stipend (1) Asha Rao has been editor; will continue? If not, should solicit a new editor iv) $100 division co-sponsored reception 6) Planning for next year’s conference in Philadelphia, PA a) Theme: “Same Problem Different Day: Recognizing and Responding to Recurring Social Problems” b) Session planning & finding organizers i) Can have three division-sponsored sessions [one thematic] and up to seven co-sponsored sessions; traditional, roundtable, critical dialogue (1) Discussed possible divisions to approach about co-sponsoring (so far: technology, sport, family, educational problems, teaching social problems, theory, racial/ethnic minorities, drinking and drugs, mental health) (2) For our three division-sponsored sessions: 1) General disability roundtable; 2) maybe an invited speaker?; 3) One thematic session (Ideas: something along the lines of accommodation vs. access; social movements and disability activism intergenerationally…”Disability Activism Over Time”) (3) In the future, could we host some kind of panel event, such as a screening of a documentary and have a discussion? ii) Discussed keeping session topics as broad as possible to encourage more submissions c) Division reception planning i) Possibly coordinate with ASA Disability & Society Division next year (couldn’t this year due to COVID restrictions) 7) Open forum for other items of interest to the division a) Should we make a new social media account for the division? Had a Facebook account long ago but it is no longer active. b) Brought up in Chair’s council the idea of consolidating and/or re-branding divisions. Also talked about the option of reducing the number of sessions. List of questions will be generated for division chairs to send to their members. i) Discussed that virtual attendance might help with this issue c) We should ask for our membership data over time to see what the trend is d) Discussed the value of having a student representative for the division (solicit membership feedback on this in the newsletter) e) Discussed the idea of having a mentorship session, such as on publishing on disability
