Society for the Study of Social Problems  Sexual Behavior, Politics, and Communities Division (SBPC)  Annual Business Meeting Minutes 2:00-4:00 pm, July 14, 2022 via Zoom   Attendance – Patricia Barrett, Dawn Baunach, Janelle Pham, Josh Warren, alithia zamantakis The meeting was called to order at 2:06pm. The meeting began with a brief welcome from Chair, Dawn Baunach, who welcomed our new Chair, Janelle Pham, and Associate Chair, alithia zamantakis. Next, we moved into brainstorming session topics for the 2023 program on the theme Same Problem Different Day: Recognizing and Responding to Recurring Social Problems, to be held in Philadelphia, PA. The ideas floated during the meeting are listed below – these are subject to change based on possibilities for co-sponsorships, and all titles listed are tentative: Division-Sponsored: 1. Sexualities on the Edge (Critical Dialogue) - this is a SBPC division “staple,” as it were, offered every year; Kathleen Asbury has volunteered to organize this session 2. Sexualities and Activism (Roundtable or Critical Dialogue?) - tied to the 2023 program theme, particularly President Jackson’s call for ways to highlight the Society’s public-facing sociology and social problems work 3. Sexualities in Historical Context: The Past is Present (Regular Paper Session) - tied to the 2023 program theme, this session will examine how various sexualities-based social issues, such as war, disease, or access to rights such as marriage, resurface at different points in history, under different social, political and economic conditions, yet consistently pose threats to sexual autonomy – topics mentioned during the brainstorming session included war and wartime violence, public health issues such as AIDS and monkeypox, and same-sex marriage Co-sponsored (all potential co-sponsorships are tentative): 1. Gender, Sexuality and the Law (co-sponsored with Law and Society, maybe Gender)? 2. Reproductive Justice (with Health and Racial/Ethnic Minorities) 3. Aging Sexualities (with Aging and Life Course) 4. Sexualities and Schools/Education/Public Discourses on Sex (with Teaching Sexualities) – alithia organized? – or a roundtable on teaching sex in college courses 5. Sexuality and Disabilities (co-sponsored with Disability) 6. DuBois and Sexualities (co-sponsored with Racial/Ethnic Minorities) – takes advantage of our 2023 annual meeting location in Philadelphia 7. Sexualities and Environmental Justice (sponsorship with Environment and Technology? Or Conflict, Social Action and Change?) 8. Sexuality and Global Crises (sponsorship with Global?) Next, outgoing chair Dr. Baunach gave all in attendance a “heads up” that the division will be in need of volunteers to serve on awards committees in the upcoming year – more on those committees to follow via email. Next, a brief breakdown of our division budget and explanation of expenditures was given. The outgoing chair then solicited feedback from present division members on how to better communicate with the Division going forward. While email is certainly the most convenient way of communicating, it was mentioned that keeping emails brief and highlighting or bolding pertinent information may invite more engagement. The meeting was adjourned at 2:39pm. Respectfully submitted, Janelle M. Pham
