We want to make sure all voices are heard. ? Welcoming Hans-Peter de Ruiter - new division chair! 2. Smith Award for Scholar-Activism (presented by Hans and Colin) ? Distinguished Contribution Award (presented by Janet, Paul, Suzanne, Eric) 3. Question for discussion: How do we support our IE colleagues, in particular the SSSP IE division, during this time and in the future? (approx. 30-35min) ? IE division: Unique (compared to other SSSP divisions) in that we have many Canadians ? Chicago conference restructuring of sessions ? Conferences will be in the USA in the coming few years ? Division restructuring: Overview of information from division restructuring ? Do we want a larger membership? OR Do we want to combine with another division? ? We are ‘at risk’ of consolidation based on our membership (see PDFs) ? Research sub-group? ? Should we have fewer conference sessions? Usually 1-2 don’t run, this year half didn’t run. ? Notes: There was some good conversation on this topic, however we also decided to schedule another meeting on this topic so we can speak more fully. On the conference next year, it is likely we may be facing a similar situation to what we faced this year with Chicago (the conference is in NYC). We did, however, manage to suggest a few broad sessions for next year, and Hans represented the IE division at the planning meeting for next year. More details to come on this as things will be finalized in the coming weeks, but here is where we are now: 1) IE sponsored session (we are considered a ‘small’ division, and so can have 1 IE session) Session title: New Directions in IE Session format: Regular Organizer: Katie Koralesky (she cannot attend the conference, but can help to organize, unless someone who knows they will be there would like to organizer and then also preside). IE co-sponsored sessions: 3 total 1. Session title: Mapping colonization of life worlds: How institutions invade daily life (conference theme) Session format: Critical dialogue Organizer: Lauren Eastwood (IE) and hopefully Global (pending!) 2. Session title: How institutional and systemic factors impact family, health and well-being Session format: Critical dialogue or regular (pending) Session organizer: Hans-Peter de Ruiter, co-sponsored with Pending options: Family, Aging, and Youth or Sociology (?) or Social Work, and Social Welfare (?) 3. Session title: Advocacy and Change Session format: Regular Session organizers: Lauren Eastwood and Clay Awsumb (with Conflict, Social Action, and Change division) ? At the Division Chair meeting on Aug 4, the chair was going to try and get more information from the SSSP board on how much money we actually have for the conference. Notes: Hans and Katie will try to get any information they can and share with the IE division. ? More broadly: Canadian Sociological Association, International Sociological Association - do we want to work more with these groups? Notes: We have a few connections here to other groups, Colin Hastings spoke about the CSA, and Janet Rankin spoke about some mentorship groups she and others are a part of. We discussed mapping these opportunities to somehow have them more easily accessible for IE scholars who want to participate. We will discuss more at our next meeting. 4. Award and workshop committee planning for 2026 Conference (NY, USA Aug 7-9) (approx. 10 min.) ? Workshop committee ? 2025 committee: Laura Parson, Anna Rockwell, Hans Peter. ? Workshop went 100% virtual in 2025. ? 2026 committee: Notes: We missed the deadline to request an in-person workshop at the SSSP 2026 conference. This year went 100% virtual and was a success. For next year’s workshop, the workshop 2025 team will meet to discuss how things went, and then as a division, we will think about how we want to do a workshop next year. ? George W. Smith Paper Award ? 2025 committee: Helen Hudson, Naomi Nichols, Liz Brule ? No paper was awarded for 2025. Clarifications needed for ‘student’ at SSSP level. ? Consider another paper award - Early career paper award? Notes: 2026 committee: Helen Hudson, Colin Hastings, Agnieska Doll ? Dorothy E. Smith Award for Scholar-Activism: Award details: https://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/pageid/1713/ ? 2025 committee: Vivienne Namaste, Colin Hastings ? Try to give to someone in the geographic region where the conference is taking place. Notes: 2026 committee: Colin Hastings (perhaps also the award winner from this year, Dr. Erica R. Meiners?) and we need someone else, maybe from the NYC area so they can help identify an awardee? [KK1] ? Distinguished Contribution Award (new in 2024) ? This is a new award initiated by Eric Mykhalovskiy in 2024. ? 2025 committee: Paul Luken, Suzanne Vaughan, Eric Mykhalovskiy Notes: There was a proposal made by Paul Luken to rename this award after Alisson Griffith. People in the meeting were in agreement. Paul and others will consider the award name and write a draft award description for the website. This award does not have a committee as of yet. 5. Other agenda items Notes: Marie would like to begin a “conversation” in the news letter. She would generate some “food for thought” writing. The goal would be to discover whether/how we can “join the dots” in IE research. ==> Katie can connect Marie and Gina, who has agreed to continue being our newsletter editor. Eric confirmed that you don’t have to be a member of the Canadian Sociological Association (CSA) to become a member of the CSA IE research cluster. But you do have to be a CSA member to attend the CSA conference. Please reach out to Eric or Colin if you have questions. [KK1]Need another 1-2 committee members
