SSSP Gender Division  
Meeting Minutes

1. Introductions 


 
2. Reviewed 2022 meeting theme – The Sociological Reimagination: From Moments to Momentum 


 
3. Discussed possible creation of a manuscript review group – This would provide a network for scholars to support publications and gain feedback from colleagues before submitting manuscripts for review. The group would be consulted on an as-needed basis. Some potential challenges are publicizing the group and getting people to commit to volunteering as reviewers. Members who are interested in forming such group can contact Shannon. 


 
4. 2022 Meeting Sessions 

• 3 solo sessions 

• 7 co-sponsored sessions 

• At least one themed 

• There has been a push for critical dialogue, but the other options are panel, roundtable and standard 


 
Ideas for sessions included Gender and Methodology; Gender and Work (co-sponsor with Labor); Gender and Post-pandemic Reflections/Covid Experience; Queer, Trans*, and Gender(ed) Lived Realities (co-sponsor with Sexual Behavior, Politics and Communities); Gender and Violence in Global Context; Gender and Embodiment (especially to celebrate 35 years since publication of “Doing Gender”); Gender and Law; (co-sponsor with Law and Society); Gender and Race (focus on masculinities); Gender and Social/Political Change (could be thematic).  
 
A potential issue with Critical Dialogue sessions is that many universities, especially those abroad, will not fund faculty to present in this type of session (needs to be a Paper session). Alternatively, Critical Dialogue sessions may be productive for engaging non-academics, especially community activists and others working on the ground.   
 
Shannon will work with other Division Chairs at July 14 Chairs meeting to solidify co-sponsorships and follow up with people who put ideas forward to confirm sessions and organizers. List of sessions will likely be modified based on other divisions’ plans.
