Illinois State University. 440 Schroeder Hall, Normal, IL 61790-5250. Email: cabell6@ilstu.edu Greetings everyone. I hope your fall semester has come to a gentle conclusion.  As we look toward the summer and our Annual conference in the Great city of Philadelphia, I hope we can take time to reflect on what we have accomplished in our academic and activist work.  While the climb toward Social Justice sometimes seems more and more steep, I think we should all take a moment to recognize the good work that we have collectively accomplished over the past year.   The work has taken many forms: activism, organizing, teaching, publishing, and learning. I attended Michelle Alexander's lecture at my university, The University of Akron, a few months ago.  She revisited her arguments made in her now ten-year-old book, The New Jim Crow.  Listening to her in the context of the tragic death of Akron Ohio citizen Jayland Walker at the hands of 8 police officers who shot him over 90 times was transformative.  During her talk, she recounted being told that she was ‘part of the system’ by a young defendant.  Many of us in the audience resonated with her realization.  I no longer wish to be a part of a system that recreates and reproduces systemic inequality and its brutal manifestations. I’ll be making changes in what and how I teach. I have asked our incoming Chair to consider beginning a discussion on a name change for our division: A name that better represents our Social Justice focus as an organization  is in order.  I look forward to seeing how this conversation unfolds.   This is my last conference as chair of CJDD.  I am looking forward to Dr. Chris Dum’s leadership. Please welcome him as our new chair.  I also look forward to Chair-Elect Rafia J. Mallick’s contributions in the years to come.  Be sure to congratulate her when you see her at the conference as well!  I also look forward to Dr. Miltonette O. Craig’s work as Associate Chair of CJDD.  Thanks to you all for stepping up and being leaders for our division and thanks to everyone who ran for our open positions.  A special thanks to Dr. Charles Bell for all of his support over the years as Associate Chair.   With that said, I look forward to seeing and learning from you all in August.  But first, let us take a moment to breathe, reflect, and gather our strength.   Sincerely, Rob Peralta  Robert L. After earning my Ph.D. in sociology in 2018, I joined the criminal justice sciences department at Illinois State University. My research focuses on understanding how Black students and parents perceive school punishment and its impact on their lives. I also conduct research on school safety and teacher victimization.   Over the last several years, I have established strong relationships with social justice organizations and policymakers throughout the Midwest. These relationships have helped me understand the real-world application of our work and make a concerted effort to craft policies that improve outcomes for communities. As associate chair, I look forward to creating opportunities that allow us to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practice.   Charles Bell, Ph.D. Associate Chair (2021-2023) Chair-Elect Christopher P. Dum (Ph.D., University at Albany) is an associate professor at Kent State University in the department of sociology. His research uses qualitative methods, as well as experimental survey research to examine the effects of mass incarceration and sex offense policy. Specifically, Dr. Dum’s work examines how individuals with criminal and sex offense histories are received by the community. His book, Exiled in America: Life on the Margins in a Residential Motel (2016, Columbia University Press) uses ethnographic methods, while his other work has been published in Journal of Experimental Criminology, Criminology and Public Policy, and Sex Abuse: A Journal of Research and Treatment. Currently, he is studying ways to reduce the stigma applied to formerly incarcerated individuals. Christopher P.
