2014 Annual Meeting Fifty Years Later: From a War on Poverty to a War on the Poor August 15-17, 2014 San Francisco Marriott Marquis  San Francisco, CA    Message from the Chair   Dear Division Members,   The long winter is finally over and we can start looking forward to summer and the next Annual Meeting, which will happen in San Francisco. We had a great meeting in New York last year, and hope to do even better this year. See inside for a summary of the meeting (with photos!), division news and announcements regarding jobs and member publications.   Cheers,   Ellen   Inside this issue: 2013 Annual Meeting 2 Division News 3 2014 Annual Meeting Deadlines 3 Member Publications 3-4 Job Announcements 4 Annual Meeting Preview 5 2013 Annual Meeting Summary   The Drinking and Drugs Division had nine well-attended sessions at the 2013 meeting in New York, which drew a total of 1,007 participants – a SSSP record. There were also quite a few partygoers at the division reception at Kabin Bar on Saturday night, which as always was held jointly with the Alcohol, Drugs & Tobacco section of the ASA. We were especially happy to celebrate the achievements of two members: Harry Levine, who received the Senior Scholar Award, and David Frank, winner of the Bruce D. Johnson Student Paper competition.   See how much fun we had, below. Thanks to Steve Lankenau for the photos!   A good time was had by all! Key celebrants Harry Levine & Lalo Valdez Say Cheese! Division News   ==> Incoming Division Chair   Please join me in welcoming Alice Cepeda as our new Division chair (2014-2016), starting immediately after the Annual Meeting. We had a few strong candidates running this time, which says a lot about the quality and commitment of our membership and bodes well for the Division’s future. Thanks to all who participated, and congratulations to Alice!   ==> New Mission Statement   If you haven’t done so already, please read the Division’s revised mission statement, at http://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/pageid/1321/m/464. The new statement retains much of the previous version, but SSSP requires that divisions revise their statements every two years, and this was an opportunity to recognize some recently developing issues, such as those related to medicalization and legalization of marijuana. Big thanks to the mission statement committee for their thoughtful work and collaboration: Miriam Boeri, Kathryn Nowotny and Dina Perrone. We also revised the list of key books and articles that follows the mission statement. If you would like to recommend an addition to the list, please send me the bibliographic information at benoit@ndri.org and I will forward it to the committee.   ==> D&D Member in the News   Alex I. Thompson, a graduate instructor in sociology at the University of Colorado – Boulder, was recently featured in the local paper. The article highlights how Alex’s experiences with medical marijuana, both as a patient and as a bakery employee, drive his research and enrich his Drugs and U.S. Society course. It conveys how Alex’s approach incorporates concepts of social justice that are important to the Drinking & Drugs division and to SSSP. I highly recommend the article: http://www.dailycamera.com/cu-news/ci_25351041/cu-boulder-sociologist-exploring-shifts-everyday-life-marijuana. Congratulations to Alex – and to his fortunate students!   ==> 2014 Annual Meeting Deadlines   The preliminary program will be available online by May 15.   Program participants must register for the meeting by July 1.   Online registration is available until July 28.   For complete meeting information, go to http://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/m/562/2014_Annual_Meeting/   Member Publications   Barkan, Steven E. 2015. Criminology: A Sociological Understanding, sixth edition.
