D R I N K I N G & D R U G S D I V I S I O N Winter 2011 2012 Annual Meeting Program Theme: The Art of Activism 62nd Annual Meeting August 16th to 18th, 2012 The Grand Hyatt Denver Hotel Denver, CO MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRDear Members, The 2011 SSSP annual meeting in Las Vegas, while now a receding memory, was a success. The Drinking and Drugs presentations, which covered a range of topics across the fields of alcohol and drugs, were substantive and the sessions were well-attended. The meeting was topped off with a lively joint reception with ASAÕs Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drugs section at a lounge in VegasÕs historic downtown. Congratulations again to Claire Sterk who received the 2011 Senior Scholar Award. The 2012 annual meeting will be held in Denver. On the back page of this issue, I invite you review the six Drinking and Drugs sessions planned for 2012 our annual meeting and to submit an abstract. The deadline for submitting an abstract is January 31, 2012. Our division will be holding an election in the Spring of 2012 to select an in-coming chair. Anyone interested in running for this position can email me (lankenau@drexel.edu) or the head of the election committee, Lalo Valdez (avelardv@usc.edu). In the coming months, our division will also be holding a Graduate Student Paper competition and choosing a Junior Scholar Award recipient. Last year, we only received one submission for the paper competition, and consequently, did not give out an award. Please encourage your graduate students to submit a paper (see page 3 of this issue). I encourage to you review a listing of some recently published papers by our members (see page 4). These publications indicate high-levels of scholarship (all available in PubMed) as well as sociological and public health significance. Lastly, Happy Holidays and have a great start to 2012.
