Laura is an incredible environmental scholar and teacher and I know we are in good hands with her at the helm. As I leave, I would also like to thank Clare Cannon and Lisa East for co-editing the newsletter this year! There are divisions where the Chair also edits the newsletter-there is no way I could have done the job they have done.਍ഀ I would also make a final plea for our members to be more active. Creating two to three newsletters each year has proven to be a chore. We often have to cajole, beg, and plead with members, usually people we directly know, for a write-up or interview. I co-edit the Teaching and Learning Section's (ASA) newsletter and I have to turn down material from members or save it for future newsletters. Our division members do really important work, we need to let SSSP and others know what we are up to. And, as I have written in each newsletter, we need more members. For the last few years we have been below SSSP's membership threshold for an active division. Don't presume that your colleagues are in the Division, they probably should be, but are probably not. Come to our Divisional Meeting (Saturday, 10:30-12:10 Puget Sound) where we make plans for next year's sessions. You can volunteer to organize a session or collaborate with others to co-organize or preside. Or you can pitch an idea to Laura or myself. ਍ഀ I'd like to congratulate our 2016 Brent K. Marshall Graduate Student Paper Award winner Lauren Contorno. In her paper, 'Turtles & Teamsters Revival? Analyzing Labor Unions' Environmental Discourse from the 2014 People's Climate March', she looks at blue-green alliances in the People's Climate March and finds that discourse amongst her interviewees combines an environmental justice master frame and a revival of social movement unionism. She states that there is a new labor upsurge that favors a community orientation towards solving environmental issues and that labor organizations are proving to be an integral component to the climate movement. Special thanks to our all-star award committee-Victor Perez (University of Delaware), Erin Robinson (Canisius College), and Tamara Mix (Oklahoma State University) for reading and evaluating all of the submissions. ਍ഀ Being chair, I've sometimes reluctantly attended those 8am sessions, somehow always coincidentally after a late night/early morning of catching up with old friends, and I've been amazed at the research presented. A lot of the scholars that present at E/T sessions are graduate students-which all of us big time folks once were-you remember how difficult it could be to have your voice heard at a conference or to just meet academics/activists a few steps ahead of you-please go to sessions and support these students. They will be your colleagues one day soon. SSSP offers a Meeting Mentor Program--volunteer. I am enthusiastic about taking on a leadership role within the organization given its firm commitment to social justice-a virtue we all undoubtedly share and one that serves as a guiding principle for the research we conduct. Our current and prior leaders have done an outstanding job of cultivating a robust membership and fostering participation within the division. I am excited to build upon such efforts to grow and diversify the E&T membership pool, and to continue to implement strategies to strengthen graduate students' presence in the organization and participation at annual meetings. I am deeply committed to furthering efforts to foster young scholars and encourage their scholarship in meaningful ways. Given the ecological crises we collectively face, it is critical that we continue to grapple with the multitude of environmental and technological issues that disrupt social justice. However, publishing can an intimidating process early in one's academic career. One way to navigate this process is to work with a co-author. Co-authors share the workload, bring added expertise to the paper, and can offer friendly peer revision without the sting of editorial rejection. Co-authors are another set of eyes to help guide and edit the paper. Perhaps there's a class paper you wrote that has been sitting in a folder on your laptop for a year or two? Sometimes sharing your idea with a colleague is all the motivation you need to work together to get it into the publishing stream. Try having a conversation with a colleague about this project, particularly if you think your areas might overlap. Reach out to peers or professors in your department as co-authors or to folks you have connected with at conferences over shared research interests. Often, an article will work best when the authors' interests overlap, but are not identical. In this situation, both authors bring their knowledge to the table and the intersections make their research unique.
