P., and Black, T. (2015). On becoming a teen mom: Life before pregnancy. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press. Congratulations to Family Division Mary Erdmans whose co-authored book won the Distinguished Book Award, Honorable Mention, from the Race, Class and Gender Section of the American Sociological Association, for 2017. In this myth-shattering book, the authors tell the life stories of 108 brown, white, and black teen mothers, exposing the problems in their lives often overlooked in pregnancy prevention campaigns. Some stories are tragic and painful, marked by sexual abuse, partner violence, and school failure. Others depict "girl next door" characters whose unintended pregnancies lay bare insidious gender disparities. Offering a fresh perspective on the links between teen births and social inequalities, this book demonstrates how the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, and class shape the biographies of young mothers. CALL FOR PAPERS: MICHIGAN FAMILY REVIEW Submission of original essays, empirical research articles, and critical reviews are encouraged on all topics related to the study of contemporary families across the life course. Submissions can address a variety of family topics while prioritizing a life course perspective. Specific topic submissions can include but are not limited to relationship patterns across the life span, key family moments and transitions, divorce and other relationship dissolutions, childbirth and childrearing, grandmothering and grandfathering, retirement and other paid work transitions, blending and unblending households, caregiving transitions, migration and immigration, end-of-life and other aging experiences within family life, family membersÕ disclosures of LGBTQIA identities, familial dealings with chronic illness diagnoses and other adverse events, and negotiations that individuals make during other family transitions. We encourage research that takes into consideration the wide variety of contemporary contexts that directly impact definitions of family, the rights of parents or partners, the wellbeing of children or the elderly, communication with families, family identity, family structure, the diversity of families, the everyday dynamics or realities of family life, and theoretical or methodological contributions to the study of families. We especially encourage submissions from students and junior faculty. Submit manuscripts electronically by February 15, 2017, to Heather Dillaway at dillaway@wayne.edu. Please include ÒMichigan Family Review, Volume 22Ó in the subject line.
