SOCIETY FOR THE STUDY OF SOCIAL PROBLEMS: Family Division Newsletter Summer 2014 Editor: Laura Simon, M.A. University of Nebraska Ð Lincoln Inside This Issue From the Desk of Our Division Chair 1 Sharing Our Accomplishments 2 Annual Meeting Information 3 From the Desk of Our Division Chair Dear Family Division, I hope the summer has been treating you well. The SSSP staff has organized a superb program for our 64th annual meeting in San Francisco from August 15th-17th. ItÕs not too late to register on-site, and I look forward to seeing many of you in San Francisco! The conference theme ÒFifty Years Later: From a War on Poverty to a War on the PoorÓ is still as timely as ever. President Obama signed a federal farm bill in March, which cut food stamp benefits to AmericaÕs poorest families. Yet nearly half of the sixteen affected states have resisted implementing those cuts. Congressional Republicans have recently proposed new ways to continue reducing these benefits. The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) is just one example of how the United States continues to wage a War on the Poor. Come to the Annual meeting in San Francisco to strategize about how we can address poverty on a national and global level. Do you want to become more involved in the Family Division? Consider the following options: ¥ If youÕre a new member, let us introduce you to the division. Please contact myself of the newsletter editor, Laura Simon, for more details. ¥ Write a brief piece about an issue, research topic, or current event that relates to families ¥ Volunteer to organize or co-organize a paper session for the 2015 meetings in Chicago ¥ Volunteer to chair or co-chair the graduate student paper competition award committee or to judge or co-judge papers in the graduate student paper competition ¥ If youÕll be in San Francisco, come to the Family Division Meeting on Friday, August 15, 12:30pm-2:10pm in the Club Room. Otherwise, feel free to drop me an e-mail with any ideas. I look forward to seeing you in San Francisco! Books Clare Huntington, Failure to Flourish: How Law Undermines Family Relationships The book argues that families are essential to both individual and societal flourishing but the law undermines family relationships in multiple, unappreciated ways, contributing to inequality in America. In response, the book sets forth a new, more emotionally intelligent vision for a legal system that not only resolves familial conflict but actively encourages the healthy relationships that are at the core of a stable society. Nancy Mezey, LGBT Families The book takes a social constructionist perspective andÊpresents a comprehensive yet accessible understanding of LGBT families today by drawing upon and making sense of the burgeoning scholarly literature about LGBT families from the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Drawing on multidisciplinary data, the book pays particular attention to how structures of race, class, gender, sexuality, and age shape LGBT families, and how members of such families negotiate the social landscapes within which they exist. The book also contains information about LGBT families and communities around the world. The book aims at helping readers better understand the formation, experiences, challenges, and strengths of LGBT families by addressing two main questions:ÊWhy are new family forms so threatening to certain groups of people in society?ÊandÊHow are new family forms beneficial to the society in which they exist?
