Now that we’re solidly into this unusual autumn, we hope that everyone has become more familiar with new protocols that have been put in place in institutions across the country. With the fall also come a multitude of opportunities - student paper awards, running for the Gender Chair, and proposing upcoming workshops. We hope that this newsletter can shed light on these opportunities, encourage you to send questions, and hope to see your papers, nominations, and votes! Important: Gender Division Chair Elections We are now taking nominations (including self-nominations!) for Gender Chair! This is a great opportunity to contribute to the direction of the Gender division at SSSP. In addition, this is a wonderful experience to be accounted for on your CV. The election process needs the following to proceed: * 2 candidates * Candidates need to be current members. Please have your nominations in by this coming Friday, October 23 Call for Student Papers The Gender Division announces the 2021 Graduate Student Paper Competition. Papers may be empirical and/or theoretical and may be on any aspect of gender broadly defined. The winner will receive a cash award of $200, a plaque of recognition, student membership in SSSP for 2021 (value $30), complimentary registration for the 2021 annual meeting to help the winner attend the meeting (value $60). The winner will be invited to present the winning paper at one of the Gender sessions at the 2021 annual meeting. To be eligible, a paper must meet the following criteria: 1) The applicant must be a graduate student at the time of the SSSP annual meeting in Chicago on August 6-8 2021 2) the applicant must be the first (lead) author on the paper; 3) the paper must not be co-authored with a faculty member or a colleague who is not a student; 4) the paper must not have been submitted to or accepted for publication (papers that have been submitted for presentation at a professional meeting are eligible); 5) the paper must not exceed 30 pages including notes, references, and tables; 6) the paper must be typed using 12-point font in either Times New Roman; 7) student papers may only be submitted to one of the SSSP division award competitions. All submitting authors are required to submit their papers through the annual meeting Call for Papers process as a condition for consideration for the award. Please submit your paper electronically as a Microsoft Word or PDF file to Giovanna Follo at giovanna.follo@wright.edu. In order to be considered for any of the Student Paper Competitions, applicants are required to submit their papers through the Annual Meeting Call for Papers, https://www.sssp1.org/2021_Call_for_Papers, prior to the January 15, 2021 submission deadline. This will ensure that winning papers are both designated and included in the program. Please note that students may only submit to one division and that each division has its own deadline and submission process. Papers are not eligible for presentation or division competitions or awards/scholarships/fellowships if they have been published or accepted for publication before being submitted for consideration. Papers are not eligible if they have been presented previously at SSSP or presented or accepted for presentation at other professional meetings, unless they have been revised substantially with new data, findings, or theoretical contributions. Annual Meeting in Chicago 2021 We encourage you to come and meet us in person at the Gender Division committee meeting in Chicago. Being an active committee member not only is a great anchor for navigating the often overwhelming atmosphere of a conference but it’s a great way to give your ideas of what content you want to see in future conferences.
