Society for the Study of Social Problems: HEALTH, HEALTH POLICY AND HEALTH SERVICES DIVISION NEWSLETTER FALL/WINTER 2021 MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS As we continue to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, our Division members’ work is more important than ever. We are hopeful that we will be able to share our research in-person during the annual SSSP meeting in LA in August. Our Division has planned a number of timely sessions in a variety of formats, from standard paper sessions to roundtables to short critical dialogues that allow us to present ideas and debate specific issues. We hope all Division members will consider submitting to the conference. Please keep in mind that the January 15 deadline is rapidly approaching. In addition to details on conference sessions, this issue of our Division newsletter includes information about our graduate student paper award, a number of articles and policy briefs you may find useful in your own work or as you plan for your course content for next term, and a variety of job opportunities. Bill Cabin is in his last year as Co-Chair of the Division, and we need to have at least two nominees for our Division election. Please consider serving in this role! Sincerely, Bill Cabin, Co-Chair (2020-2022) Jennifer Roebuck Bulanda, Co-Chair (2021-2023) DIVISION OPPORTUNITIES AND AWARDS Call for Nominations for Division Co-Chair Bill Cabin’s term as co-chair ends at the 2022 Annual Meeting in August. As a result, the Division will hold an election in early 2022 for a new co-chair. The new co-chair will work with Jennifer Bulanda who is in her first year as a co-chair. We are required to have at least two nominees for the position. Self-nominations are welcome. Anyone interested in running for the co-chair position should contact Bill Cabin (wcabin@umich.edu) or Jennifer Bulanda (bulandjr@miamioh.edu) by December 10, 2021. Graduate Student Paper Award The Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division invites all graduate students to apply for this annual paper award competition. The paper should be related to the broad Division interest, including health and illness, health policy, and health services. Current graduate students and recent graduates (who received their degrees after January 2021) may submit a paper if it was written while a student. Papers based on theses or dissertations are acceptable. Co-authored papers are acceptable as long as all the listed authors were graduate students at the time the paper was written. Double submission to other SSSP award competitions will disqualify the submission. The award recipient will present a version of the winning paper at a session of the 2022 SSSP Annual Meeting. Thus, the paper also should be submitted to any Health Division meeting session organizer or the roundtable organizer by the January 15, 2022 deadline. The recipient will receive a monetary prize of $150, a plaque of recognition, student membership, and conference registration. The winner will be recognized at the Division Meeting as well as the SSSP Awards Ceremony. Send an electronic copy of the paper and a cover letter identifying your graduate program to: Jennifer Bulanda (bulandjr@miamioh.edu) and William Cabin (wcabin@umich.edu). The paper submission should not exceed 30 double-spaced pages (including references) and should be prepared for anonymous review (with the author specified only on the cover page). In addition, authors are required to submit their papers through the annual meeting Call for Papers online submission portal for presentation at a conference session.
