Society for the Study of Social Problems: HEALTH, HEALTH POLICY AND HEALTH SERVICES DIVISION NEWSLETTER SPRING/SUMMER 2022 MESSAGE FROM THE CO-CHAIRS After a two-year pause on in-person meetings, we are eagerly anticipating the annual SSSP meeting in Los Angeles in August. Our Division is sponsoring or co-sponsoring a number of exciting sessions, and we will host a Division reception on Saturday evening. Don’t forget to register and make hotel reservations! We understand that the health and economic impacts of the ongoing pandemic and a variety of other constraints mean that not all Division members will be able to travel to Los Angeles this summer. We have opted to hold our annual Divisional business meeting virtually rather than on-site at the annual meeting this year. We hope this allows more members to attend. Our Divisional meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. EST via Zoom. The meeting agenda and Zoom link are included on page 3. This issue of our Division newsletter includes information about the winner of our Division’s graduate student paper award, our incoming co-chair, conference session information, and links to new publications of interest. Please continue to share your accomplishments with us for inclusion in future newsletters. We look forward to seeing many of you in L.A.! Sincerely, Bill Cabin, Co-Chair (2020-2022) Jennifer Roebuck Bulanda, Co-Chair (2021-2023) INCOMING & OUTGOING DIVISION CO-CHAIRS Congratulations to Yuying Shen, who was elected incoming Division Co-Chair. Dr. Shen is an Associate Professor in the Sociology Department at Norfolk State University. She will begin her two-year Co-Chair position at the SSSP annual meeting, replacing Bill Cabin, whose term is ending. We appreciate Dr. Cabin’s service to the Division, and welcome to Dr. Shen! GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARD WINNER Congratulations to Dr. Lilla Pivnick, the winner of this year’s Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division Graduate Student Paper Award for her paper, “The Lived Experiences of Ethical Responsibility in Care Work Occupations: The Case of Nurses, Teachers, and Social Workers.” She will present her work at the annual SSSP meeting in the “Health of the Healthcare Workforce” session at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday, August 7. An excerpt from her paper’s abstract provides an overview of her project: Professional care workers—spanning the health care, education, and social services sector—are an increasingly essential workforce that provide face-to-face services in the context of interpersonal relationships that help vulnerable populations develop or improve valued aspects of their lives. Although ethical responsibilities may look different in practice across the care work sectors, the extent to which care workers feel that they are able to carry out their ethical responsibilities likely colors how they experience their jobs and factors into whether they remain in the care work force long term. In this spirit, this study draws on qualitative interviews conducted in Fall 2020 with 41 men and women employed in three of the largest occupations in the health care, education, and social service industries and examines the extent to which care workers—both as a whole and by industry—interpret their ethical responsibilities and see themselves as fulfilling or falling short of them in ways that contribute to job satisfaction or burnout. It also explores the ways in which COVID-19 has changed ethical responsibilities and care workers’ abilities to carry them out, and provides policy recommendations around ensuring care workers have the supports they need to healthfully and sustainably manage emotionally and physically challenging work. Dr. Pivnick is currently a Research and Data Analyst in the Division of Early Learning at the Tennessee Department of Education and a Strategic Data Project Fellow with Harvard University’s Center for Education Policy Research. She will be recognized at the Division Meeting as well as at the SSSP Annual Meeting Awards Ceremony. ANNUAL DIVISION BUSINESS MEETING – JUNE 22, 2022 Meeting Information and Zoom Link The Health, Health Policy, and Health Services annual business meeting will take place virtually on Wednesday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. We encourage all Division members to attend. This meeting facilitates finding Division committee members, suggesting potential Division-sponsored or co-sponsored sessions for the 2023 meeting, and identifying session organizers.
