Statement from the Co-Chair Teresa L. Scheid Dear Members of the Division: I do hope you all survived one our worst Februaries, both in terms of snow and cold, and hopefully are getting some down time over spring break since you had all those snow days to get caught up on work! We are all watching the Supreme Court and the decision over the working of the Affordable Care Act. I am hopeful that even in conservative, Republican North Carolina, the Governor is asking the legislature to draft language to help protect people's health benefits (and state budgets!). Maybe the silver lining is that we may have a real conversation about the "real" costs of the underinsured. Curious to see your thoughts on this matter, Teresa L. Scheid DIVISION ELECTIONS It is time for our division elections. Please vote for our incoming Division Co-Chair. Elections are open until midnight (EST) April 4, 2015. Mize, of Indiana University, for his paper entitled "Profiles in Health: Multiple Roles and Health Lifestyles in Young Adulthood." Abstract Social roles have long been theorized to be associated with health, with most of the research on multiple roles focusing on health outcomes. Health behaviors have also been shown to have strong influences on health outcomes, but little research has examined the influence of holding multiple roles on health behavior. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N=13,964) I analyze the effects of holding multiple roles on health behaviors. Drawing on recent theoretical and empirical research, I model health lifestyles as the overall combination of multiple health behaviors. Results indicate that holding more social roles is associated with lifestyles of less health-risky behaviors. However, the type of social role matters, with intensive obligatory roles associated with less substance use while voluntary roles are associated with more active lifestyles. The results illustrate the importance of modeling overall health lifestyles and advance our understanding of holding multiple roles by examining health behavior.  Other Announcements 2014 Members: Renew your membership and Recruit a New Member!
