Healthy Outlook Division of Health, Health Policy and Health Services of the Society for the Study of Social Problems Summer 2013 Statement from the Chair Dear Colleagues and Friends of the Division: With the start of July, it is time to start looking forward to our summer meeting, scheduled for August 9-11 at the Westin New York at Times Square. As you plan out your meeting schedule, there are several events we hope you will add to your calendar. First, the Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division is sponsoring or co-sponsoring ten paper sessions. In addition, the Program Committee has added an additional Critical Dialogue session on health-related issues, and many of our sister divisions have health-related topics which we were not able to sponsor. There are a lot of intriguing papers to choose from! In a separate section of this newsletter, there is a listing of Division sponsored sessions, along with the individual papers scheduled for each. In addition, LaTonya Trotter from Princeton University who won first place in the DivisionÕs Graduate Student Paper competition for her paper entitled, "Constructing Uncertainty, Constructing Skill: Creating New Forms of Medical Expertise through Nurse Practitioner Narrative Practices,Ó will be presenting her work in Session 71, The Social Organization of Health Professional Education, on Saturday, August 10 from 12:30 PM - 2:10 PM in Broadway I. We encourage you to attend this session and hear a bit about her engaging and timely research! Second, our Division Business Meeting will be held on Friday August 9 from 4:30 pm-6:10 pm in Gershwin II. The Division meeting is where we discuss the session topics for next yearÕs meeting, appoint session organizers, and select members for the annual graduate student paper award committee. If you are interested in serving in any of these capacities or want to help plan these upcoming events, please attend our Division meeting. Immediately following the Division meeting, our Division-Sponsored Reception will be held on Friday, August 9 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. This reception is co-sponsored with several of the other special problems divisions, so if you are a member of multiple divisions, this is your chance to mingle with your colleagues from many different special topic areas. Or if the Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division is your only special problems division, itÕs your chance to branch out! A new member breakfast will be held on Friday, August 9 from 7:15am-8:15am in the Broadway Ballroom. Established SSSP members will host a continental breakfast, greeting, welcoming, and networking with new members. If youÕre a new member, please begin your meeting time by meeting colleagues in a relaxed setting. And if youÕre an existing member, please come welcome the first-timers! Division members are invited to attend the Awards Reception, Presidential Address, and Awards Ceremony. Join us for a catered reception with a cash bar honoring our Past Presidents and 2013 major SSSP Award Winners on Saturday, August 10 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. The Presidential Plenary featuring the formal address of President R.A. Dello Buono will follow from 7:30pm-8:45pm. The night will end with the SSSP Awards Ceremony, conferring the 2013 major SSSP awards from 8:45pm-10:30pm.Ê The Concert to Support the Initiative to End Domestic Violence is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to combine fun, activism, and networking. The Maul Girls will be featured performers at this event on Friday, August 9 from 7:45pm-10:30pm. Finally, our graduate student members may be interested in attending the annual Graduate Student Happy Hour, scheduled for Friday, August 9 from 10:30pm-11:30pm.ÊComplimentary appetizers and drinks will be provided! I am pleased to announce that Erin Ruel is the newly elected in-coming co-chair, joining me, beginning at the annual meeting in August and continuing through August 2015. If you see Erin at the annual meeting, please be sure to welcome her to her new role in our Division. I would also like to thank our newsletter editor, Christina Barmon, for her work in putting together the three newsletters we disseminate throughout the year. Finally, to keep up to date in between newsletters, be sure to follow us on Facebook. I look forward to seeing you in New York City!
