Statement from the Co-Chair Erin Ruel Dear Colleagues and Friends of the Division: July is here already! It’s time to prepare for San Francisco and the 64th SSSP Annual Meeting, from August 15-17. The annual meeting will be held at the San Francisco Marriot Marquis located downtown just south of Market Street, next to the Moscone Convention Center. As you plan your conference events, here are a few events that will be of interest to division members. First, the Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division is sponsoring or co-sponsoring eight paper sessions. There are a lot of intriguing papers to choose from! In a separate section of this newsletter, there is a listing of Division sponsored sessions, along with the individual papers scheduled for each. In addition, Yasmin Y. Ortiga from Syracuse University who won first place in the Division’s Graduate Student Paper competition for her paper entitled, "Professional Problems: The Burden of Educating the ‘Global’ Filipino Nurse,” will be presenting her work in Session 75, Racial Inequalities in Health Services and Health Professions, on Saturday, August 10 from 12:30 PM - 2:10 PM in Broadway I. We encourage you to attend this session and hear a bit about her engaging and timely research! Second, our Division Business Meeting will be held on Friday August 15 from 12:30 pm-2:10 pm in the CLUB ROOM. The Division meeting is where we discuss the session topics for next year’s meeting, appoint session organizers, and select members for the annual graduate student paper award committee. We especially invite newcomers—and those of you who never have attended our business meeting--to come. It’s a great way to meet other members and learn more about the work of the Division. If you are interested in organizing a session for next year’s meeting in Chicago, have ideas for the Division, or would simply like to become more involved, please come and share your ideas. If you are interested in serving in any of these capacities or want to help plan these upcoming events, please attend our Division meeting. Immediately following the Division meeting, our Division-Sponsored Reception will be held on Friday, August 15 from 6:30pm-7:30pm. This co-sponsored reception will be held at the San Francisco Marriott Marquis (SSSP conference hotel restaurant MISSION GRILLE). This reception is co-sponsored with several of the other special problems divisions, so if you are a member of multiple divisions, this is your chance to mingle with your colleagues from many different special topic areas. Or, if the Health, Health Policy, and Health Services Division is your only special problems division, it’s your chance to branch out! In addition, here are some more conference events that may be of interest to division members. NEW MEMBER BREAKFAST On Saturday, August 16 from 7:15am-8:15am (Room: Club Room), established SSSP members will host a continental breakfast, greeting, welcoming, and networking with new members.  Enter the room with a “New Member” or “Host” ribbon on your SSSP name badge. SSSP BUSINESS MEETING Plan to attend the SSSP Business Meeting on Saturday, August 16 from 4:15pm-5:25pm (Room: Club Room) for an update on the status and future of SSSP.  There will be an open discussion period following the meeting.  The meeting concludes with the traditional transfer of the gavel, marking the transition of duties from President Anna Maria Santiago to incoming President Marlese Durr.  Please consult the flyer in your computer sleeve for details on the Business Meeting agenda. PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS The Presidential Plenary featuring the formal address of President Anna Maria Santiago will follow from 5:30pm-6:30pm (Room: Club Room).  All members are invited to this important session. AWARD RECEPTION Join us for a catered reception with a cash bar honoring our Past Presidents and 2014 major SSSP Award Winners on Saturday, August 16 from 6:45pm-7:45pm (Location: Yerba Buena Ballroom, Salons 5-6). AWARD BANQUET AND CEREMONY The awards banquet and ceremony will follow the reception from 7:45m-9:45pm (Location: Yerba Buena Ballroom, Salons 1-4).  The cost of a banquet ticket is $70.  A limited number of tickets will be sold in the registration area.  Those with advance reservations will receive their ticket(s) with their name badge. The Fisherman’s Wharf dinner buffet will feature San Francisco Clam Chowder and Sourdough Rolls, Roasted Beet Salad (Arugula, Red and Gold Beets, Feta, Toasted Walnuts, Lemon Vinaigrette), Roasted Mushroom and Artichoke Salad (Tomatoes, Red Wine Vinaigrette), Fennel Crusted Chicken with Exotic Mushrooms, Seasonal Fish (Cannellini Beans, Oven Roasted Tomatoes, Peppadew-Castelvetrano Relish), Chef’s Selection of Vegetarian Entrée, Horseradish Mashed Potatoes, Seasonal Vegetables, Ghirardelli Chocolate Mousse Cups, Lemon Meringue Parfaits, Starbucks Coffee and Hot Tea Service.  A vegan dish will be available for those who request one in advance. DIVISION ELECTIONS Elections are currently underway. Please vote for our incoming Division Co-Chair. Elections are open until July 13, 2014. Go to this link to cast your vote. http://sssp1.org/index.cfm/pageId/1017. Co-Chairs serve overlapping two year terms, and are jointly responsible for: developing the Division program (identifying sessions and organizers) for the annual meeting; running the Division business meeting at the annual meeting; working with the newsletter editor to assure publication of the annual newsletter; and other Division business. Tenure begins at the annual meeting in summer 2014.  GIVING THANKS I am sure you will all join me in thanking Deborah Potter for her service to the division. Sadly, her tenure is up as Co-Chair. She did an amazing job for us and she will be missed (hopefully only as Co-chair, but not as a division member). Debbie, we wish you well as you move on to new opportunities, but look forward to seeing you at future health division events. Please also join me in thanking our division newsletter editors, Christina and Jenny, graduate students at Wayne State University. They have done a great job on the newsletters this year and I am happy to say that they have agreed to continue editing the newsletter next year. Best wishes for great and productive summer!! -- Erin Ruel News of Note * Division Member Stacy Torres has been awarded a Ford Foundation dissertation fellowship for the 2014-2015 academic year.
