A NOTE FROM THE CHAIR Dear Division Members, I hope this newsletter finds you in the midst of an enjoyable summer. I look forward to seeing you all in Chicago in just a few weeks for the annual meeting. We have a great set of sessions scheduled. Please be sure to also attend the Division meeting (we always need member input) and reception (where we will toast our graduate student paper award winner). In advance of the meeting, I wish to extend my sincerest thanks to many people for their efforts. The session organizers (Kristine Artello, Jay Borchert, Jason Houle, Kristy Irving, and John Taylor) did a great job selecting this year's papers. The Graduate Student Paper Award Committee of Elbert Almazan (Chair), Chien-Juh Gu, and Lijun Song did an excellent job picking this year's winner. And, as always, I'm incredibly appreciative of Andrea Polonijo's (UBC) efforts as our (now outgoing) newsletter editor. This is my final newsletter as Division Chair. The Chairship has been a fun experience over the past two years. Congratulations to the newly elected incoming Chair (details below), who I know will do a super job! See you in Chicago! RECRUIT YOUR COLLEAGUES AND STUDENTS TO SSSP Please encourage your colleagues and students to join or renew their membership to the Society & Mental Health Division! Membership renewal is easy and secure online at www.sssp1.org. The benefits of membership include receiving Social Problems journal and division newsletters, updates about the annual meeting, opportunities for involvement in special problems divisions, and leadership within the organization. GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARD WINNER: MICHAEL HALPIN Congratulations to University of Wisconsin-Madison Ph.D. Candidate Michael Halpin who has won the graduate student student paper award. MichaelÕs paper, ÒConstructing and Defining Mental Illness: The DSM and Professional Practices,Ó analyzes how the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is used in research, clinical and institutional practices. He argues that these three uses of the DSM correspond to the construction of three distinct categories (i.e., the subject, the patient and the customer). He concludes that the DSM has a pervasive impact on professional activity and, despite professional agency, links practices to the commodification and medicalization of mental illness. MichaelÕs research interests are in medical sociology, the sociology of mental health, science studies and organizational sociology. MichaelÕs dissertation project investigates how neuroscience impacts both the lived-experience of illness and the delivery of mental healthcare, with a specific focus on schizophrenia/psychosis and Huntington Disease.
