Call for Award Submissions Call for Submissions: Inaugural Outstanding Book Award Deadline: January 31, 2021 The Sexual Behavior, Politics, and Communities Division of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) is pleased to announce its inaugural Outstanding Book Award for 2021. At conferences held during even numbered years, the award will be given for an outstanding peer-reviewed article published in the two years prior to the year of the conference. At conferences held during odd-numbered years, the award will be given for an outstanding peer-reviewed book published in the two years prior to the year of the conference.ÊÊ For the 2021 award, the division will consider peer-reviewed books published in 2019 or 2020, with empirical and/or theoretical focus, covering any aspect of sexuality, including but not limited to sexual behavior, sexual identity, sexual politics, sex law, political activism, sexual communities, etc. The winner will receive a $100 cash award in addition to the usual bragging rights. To be eligible, the book must meet the follow criteria: 1) the book must have been published by a peer-reviewed press or publisher between January 2019 and January 2021; 2) the book may be written by students or faculty, sole or co-written; 3) the book may only be submitted to one SSSP divisionÕs Outstanding Scholar competition. Winners are expected to attend the SBPC Division business meeting at the 2021 meeting in Chicago. Applicants must submit a brief letter explaining the significance of their book to the fields relevant to SBPC and a copy of their book for consideration by the judging committee to the division associate chair by January 31, 2021. Papers may be empirical and/or theoretical, and they may be on any aspect of sexuality, including sexual behavior, sexual identity, sexual politics, sex law, political activism, sexual communities, etc. The winner will receive a plaque of recognition, one-year membership to SSSP, a waived conference registration fee to attend the 2021 meeting in Chicago, and an additional cash prize of $200. To be eligible, a paper must meet the following criteria: 1) the paper must have been written between January 2019 and January 2021; 2) the paper may not have been submitted or accepted for publication (papers that have been presented at a professional meeting or that have been submitted for presentation at a professional meeting are eligible); 3) the paper must be authored by one or more students, and not co-authored with a faculty member or colleague who is not a student; 4) the paper must not exceed 30 pages including notes, references, and tables; 5) the paper must be double-spaced and typed using 12 point font; and 6) the paper may only be submitted to one divisionÕs graduate student paper competition. Call for Committee Members Call for Committee Members: Inaugural Outstanding Book Award. Deadline: January 31, 2021 The Sexual Behavior, Politics, and Communities Division seeks five members to serve as reviewers for its inaugural Outstanding Book Award. Committee members will review the nomination letters, and the books themselves, submitted for consideration. In the first round of review (during February and March), each committee member will conduct an initial review of the books (or a subset of the books, depending on the number of nominations), and will evaluate each submission using a 5-point scale. If necessary, a second round of review, using a set of common criteria, will rank the top two or three books from the first review (tentative timeline to complete this would be late April/early May). If necessary, committee members will discuss the final decision via Zoom meeting in May. Interested members should contact Dr. Janelle Pham atjpham@oglethorpe.edu.ÊÊ Editorial Search Call for Applications Editorial Search Call for Applications: Agenda for Social Justice Deadline: January 15, 2021 The Editorial and Publications Committee of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) solicits applications for two positions on the Editorial Team of the volume, Agenda for Social Justice. The EditorÕs four-year term will start in February 2021, and the new editor will be responsible for editing and promoting volumes to be published in 2022 and 2024. An editor may be reappointed, or have their term extended, with the approval of the SSSP Editorial and Publications Committee and the SSSP Board of Directors. Applicants must be members or become members of the SSSP by the time of the application deadline and maintain membership during their tenure as editor. The primary activity required is the cultivation, editing, and production of the Agenda for Social Justice, a volume of public sociology published by Policy Press at the University of Bristol. While chapters in the volumes are grounded in rigorous social science, they are presented in a way that is accessible to a generally educated public. The editorial team is responsible for producing a volume every other year, alternating between US-focused volumes and global-focused volumes. Volumes of the Agenda for Social Justice are available open access, and are distributed to SSSP members. The committee seeks a diverse pool of candidates with good scholarly records, preferable academic editorial experience (e.g., service as journal editor or associate editor, editor of scholarly editions), strong organizational skills, and the ability to work and communicate well with others, including with scholars in academic and non-academic settings. Familiarity with the Agenda for Social Justice volumes and a commitment to the SSSP are essential. A new member should have a genuine commitment to working in the field of social justice, with an interest in the wide range of themes that the study of social problems encompasses. We encourage applications from scholars from all career stages, and applications by members of all underrepresented groups are encouraged.
