SEXUAL BEHAVIOR, POLITICS, and COMMUNITIES S B P C a division of the SSSP SUMMER 2017 Notes from the desk of: Amanda Jungels Division Chair Happy summer! I hope this pre-conference newsletter finds you all well! Since my last letter, I have relocated to New York City for a new position in the Center for Teaching and Learning at Columbia University. I’m experiencing the joys of hot and humid New York City subways for the first time, so I hope you all are having slightly cooler days, wherever you are. It is officially summer, which means our 2017 Annual Meeting in Montreal is just around the corner! We have an exciting set of sessions and papers on deck for this year’s meeting (featured in this newsletter), and I look forward to seeing many of you in Montreal. I also want to invite you to two SBPC-related events. First, our Divisional Business Meeting will be held on Friday, August 11th from 4:30pm-6:10pm, in the Outremont room. If you are interested in organizing a session next year or want to get more involved in our Division, you’ll want to attend this meeting! There is also the Division Sponsored Reception, on Saturday, August 12th from 7:45pm-8:45pm, in the Salon Ville-Marie room (on the lobby level). This event is co-sponsored with many SSSP Divisions, and is a great occasion to catch up with old friends (and make some new ones). Two final notes! First, a congratulations: Julie Gouweloos (McMaster University) won our annual Graduate Student Paper Award with her paper “Telling ‘Our’ Stories: Collectivity and Fragmentation in the LGBTQ+ Movement.” Congratulations to Julie, and thanks to Lloyd Klein for chairing our Paper Award committee! Finally, I want to extend a hearty “Thank you!” to Bee Coston, who has been our newsletter editor since the summer of 2014. Bee has done a great job putting together our newsletters over the past few years, keeping us all informed about the goings-on in our Division and the accomplishments of our members. On behalf of the SBPC membership: thank you, and best of luck! Because this will be Bee’s last newsletter, we’ll be actively seeking a new editor to start in the fall of 2017. Please contact Bee at bmcoston@vcu.edu or myself (Amanda.jungels@gmail.com) for more information if this is a role that interests you. Once again: thank you for all you do to make SBPC a great division within SSSP! I look forward to seeing you all in Montreal! Editor's Notes Alright, everybody - it's been fun but my 3-year tenure as newsletter editor has come to an end. If you are also part of the ASA's Sexualities section, you'll keep hearing from me in this role; if not, I bid you a fond farewell. If anyone is interested in taking over as newsletter editor, please email me at bmcoston@vcu.edu with your contact information and any questions you might have. Amanda and I are going to work to sort through all interested people and appoint someone at the end of August. And, don't worry, I'm going to stay on for the late fall newsletter to help with the transition! Bethany M.
