Contact him if you are interested: ejevans@ucdavis.edu Bill Society for the Study of Social Problems Sociology and Social Welfare Division Quarterly Book Reviews Our division’s mission is to develop and promote an understanding of and knowledge about the social institutions, structures and processes that create and perpetuate inequality, exclusion and oppression…[we] support the dissemination of research and conversations that assist in the creation and development of public policies, affirmative actions and social services through the application of social science knowledge, perspectives, methods and technology. Purpose: For the Sociology and Social Welfare Division to organize a regular book review section for its quarterly newsletter. The purpose of the book review section will be to identify and support works that, in line with the Division’s vision, promote a just society. The committee will consist of 2 people – a chair who is responsible for book selection and authoring the review, and a co-chair who assists the chair and will edit the review, serving as a second assessment (idea is that the co-chair will rotate into chair). The activity of the committee and the reviews will be overseen by the Division chair to ensure that the work follows the goals of the Division as a whole. Book selection: A priority will be given to books authored by division members, and those suggested by division members to the committee. Effort will be taken to not post reviews for books that will be reviewed in Social Problems. General Review Format: 250-500 words. Brief summary of the work. Discussion of main arguments. Situate work/contribution. Weaknesses (1-3). Strengths (1-3).
