Youth Aging and Life Course Newsletter Fall 2021 Contents Letter from the chair 2022 Annual Meeting Planning Member News Call for Papers News from SSSP Letter from the chair Dear Members of the Youth, Aging, and Life Course Division, Hello! I hope this fall semester is treating you all well. I would like to introduce myself as the 2021-2023 YALC Chair. I graduated in May 2021 with my PhD in Sociology from West Virginia University. I am currently a Postdoctoral Fellow for Dr. Lynne Cossman at the University of Texas at San Antonio in the College for Health, Community and Policy. I am also a Fellow for the R&D League which is a research and development program for the City of San Antonio. My research is interdisciplinary (sociology, demography, geography, etc.) but broadly focuses on spatial differences in health and mortality as well as health disparities by sexual orientation. I’m relatively new to SSSP, but I’ve felt incredibly welcomed since joining. Special thanks again to previous Chair Christina Barmon for the smooth transition. I’m eager to meet everyone at the conference and throughout the years! Speaking of, plans for the SSSP Annual Meeting (August 5-7, 2022) are well underway with the theme “The Sociological Reimagination: From Moments to Momentum.” I am excited for the TEN (10!) sessions that YALC will be sponsoring and co-sponsoring. Details on these and other sessions are available online. In addition to submitting abstracts for the meeting, please consider submitting nominations for YALC’s two awards-- 1) the Graduate Student Paper Award Competition (committee: William Cabin, Perri Leviss, Mikki Ruo-Fan Liu, and myself (chair)), and 2) the Maggie Kuhn Award for Scholar-Activists (committee: Harry Barbee, Jennifer Bulanda, and Chris Wellin (chair)). Thank you to those who volunteered to serve on the committees! Details on the awards and nomination processes can be found here or here. Deadlines for all of the above are January 15, 2022. Also, please send us your important news, announcements, and accomplishments! YALC has a newsletter we distribute three times a year, an active Facebook page, and a Twitter account @ssspYALC. Thoughts of creating a website have also been voiced (please let me know if you’re interested in getting involved!). Send your information to Isabel García Valdivia (isabel.garcia@berkeley.edu; newsletter) and/or Lea T. Marzo (lmarzo1@student.gsu.edu; social media). MEMBER NEWS BOOKS Newman, Barbara M., and Philip R. Newman. 2020. Theories of Adolescent Development. Waltham: Elsevier. "The title Theories of Adolescent Development offers a big promise―somehow distilling the myriad guiding perspectives on how young people grow, mature, and learn into a single manageable volume. Barbara and Philip Newman deliver on that promise. Drawing on their own expertise in research and teaching, they cast an incredibly wide net to cover developmental theories that look within adolescents’ bodies and minds and that situate them in contexts large and small, and they delve deep into each one. All in one place, readers can find a history lesson on how scientific thinking about adolescents has evolved over history, a comprehensive overview of where the field stands now, and a guide to putting theory into action." -- Robert Crosnoe, Associate Dean of Liberal Arts, University of Texas at Austin, and Past President of the Society for Research on Adolescence ARTICLES Blume Oeur, Freeden (guest editor). 2021. CALL FOR PAPERS Call for Papers: Disabilities and the Life Course for Research in Social Science and Disability (RSSD), Volume 14 (Edited by Heather Dillaway, Alexis Bender and Carrie Shandra) The purpose of this volume is to expand our knowledge of impairments and disabilities across the life course, both in terms of how they can change in form, meaning, and experience across time and life stage and how certain life course transitions and events can manifest differently or carry different meanings because of impairment or disability status. We hope to prioritize individuals’ lived experiences as well. Finally, we seek to highlight commonalities and differences in identity and experience with special attention to intersecting social locations and the diversity of impairments and disabilities. In this call, we seek theoretical, methodological, or empirical papers that explore individuals’ experiences of impairments and disabilities using a life course lens, from the perspective of, and including literature linked to, a social science. Both quantitative and qualitative empirical submissions are encouraged. We welcome papers on a variety of topics. See full Call for Paper details here. Submissions due: November 15, 2021.
