Call for Books for the 2023 Annual Meeting – Author Meets Critics Sessions

Author Meets Critic Sessions are designed to bring authors of recent books considered to be important contributions to the study of social problems and the advancement of social justice together with discussants chosen to provide different viewpoints. Only books published in 2021 or 2022 are eligible for nomination. You must be a current SSSP member to submit a nomination. Self-nominations are not accepted. At the discretion of the Program Chair, the Committee may invite authors whose work is particularly relevant to the year’s theme, “Same Problem, Different Day: Recognizing and Responding to Recurring Social Problems.” 

Author Meets Critics Session proposals must be submitted to the Program Chair by December 15, 2022.

SSSP: Search for the Next Social Problems Editor – Application Deadline 1/15/23

The Editorial and Publications Committee of the Society for the Study of Social Problems is soliciting applications for the position of Editor of the Society’s flagship journal, Social Problems. The Editor’s three-year term will begin with the operation of the new editorial office at mid-year 2024. The new editor will be responsible for editing and promoting Volumes 72-74 (years 2025-2027).

SSSP Call for Papers

The Call for Papers for the 73rd SSSP Annual Meeting is available. The conference will be held from August 18-20, 2023 at the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown Hotel in Philadelphia, PA. The program theme, selected by President Shirley A. Jackson is Same Problem, Different Day: Recognizing and Responding to Recurring Social Problems. As members who study social problems, let us not limit ourselves to producing knowledge for our peers but share it outside of the disciplines and in our diverse communities. The deadline for paper submissions is 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Time) on January 15, 2023.

2023 Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate Fellowship

SSSP is soliciting applications for the Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate Fellowship. Persons identified as either American Indian or Alaska Native, Arab/Middle Eastern/North African, Asian/Asian-American, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, or, including Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) from one of the aforementioned groups, accepted into an accredited doctoral program in any one of the social and/or behavioral sciences so as to expand their perspectives in the pursuit and investigations into social problems are invited to apply for the $15,000 fellowship. Online applications must be received in their entirety no later than February 1, 2023. All applicants must be a current SSSP member at the time of their application. With the exception of DACA students, who are also eligible, applicants must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.

The Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP), one of the oldest and most respected social science organizations, is especially committed to graduate students and new PhDs. In fact, students and new PhDs comprise over half of the membership of the SSSP – all committed to research and action for a more just world.
