Environment and Technology Division
GRADUATE STUDENT PAPER AWARD

The Environment and Technology Division is pleased to announce the 2027 Brent K. Marshall Graduate Student Paper Award. The award honors the late Brent K. Marshall (1965–2008), his personal and professional commitment to the Division, and his encouragement of student engagement in scholarship and research.
Papers in any area of environmental sociology will be considered, including but not limited to the political economy of the environment, global environmental issues, social movements and the environment, technology and society, natural disasters and society, and risk perception.
The winner will receive an electronic certificate of recognition, complimentary 2027 SSSP student membership and annual meeting registration, and will be recognized at the 2027 SSSP Annual Meeting awards ceremony.
To be eligible:
- All authors (whether co-authored or not) must be graduate students at the time of submission; papers co-authored with faculty or non-graduate students are not eligible;
- the paper must have been written in 2026;
- the paper must be fewer than 10,000 words, including notes, references, and tables; and
- the paper must not be published or accepted for publication before submission.
Students may submit to only one Division for a student paper award. To be considered, applicants must submit their papers through the Annual Meeting Call for Papers, and the paper must be included in the 2027 SSSP Annual Meeting program. Authors should make sure they receive confirmation that their submission was received.
