SSSP: Call for Chapter Proposals – Rapid Response Volume on “Social Problems in the Age of COVID-19”

The Justice 21 Committee of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) intends to produce a rapid-response digital first volume to focus on the effects of the worldwide corona‐virus pandemic on social problems – Social Problems in the Age of COVID19. The volume will convey scholarly insight regarding the effect of the pandemic on significant social problems to the following audiences: the public‐at‐large, scholars, students, and policy‐makers. This project affirms the resiliency and commitment of the SSSP to social justice scholarship, and will enable members of the SSSP to communicate publicly on significant social issues emerging in the United States and worldwide. This volume will be an “agenda for social justice in the age of COVID‐19,” in that it will clarify the effect of the pandemic on significant social problems, including specific recommendations for action by citizens, elected officials, policy makers, and the public.

Please review the announcement for a Call for Chapter Proposals for a Rapid-Response Volume on “Social Problems in the Age of COVID-19,” This project will be published by Policy Press. Please note that Chapter Proposals are due May 4, 2020, and drafts of chapters will be due June 1, 2020.

We hope many of our members will participate. Please share widely via various listservs, social media, and other professional networks. Thank you for your support. If you have any questions, please direct them to Dr. Glenn Muschert, Justice 21 Committee Chair, at glennmuschert@gmail.com.

Call for Resolutions Deadline – April 30

Members who wish to propose resolutions for consideration of the SSSP, should submit them to the SSSP Vice-President Daina Cheyenne Harvey at dharvey@holycross.edu by April 30, 2020. For detailed information on the resolution process, please visit https://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/m/824/Call_for_Resolutions/.

All proposed resolutions with the exception of those expressing thanks should contain a concise position statement concerning a social problem of urgent concern and the appropriate evidence and citations to support the position taken in the resolution. In most cases, the proposed resolution should include some sort of call for viable action on the part of the SSSP. This typically has involved a letter from the BOD directed to some public or private entity expressing concern, support, or opposition. Other forms of appropriate action may be proposed, but ideally any other forms of action should be discussed in advance with the Vice-President prior to submitting the proposed resolution. If the proposed resolution is in support of or in opposition to a piece of legislation, a copy of the legislation or a place where members can access it must be provided. Likewise, if the proposal is in support of or in opposition to an existing statement by another organization, a copy of that statement or a place where members can access it must be provided. Members who want to propose a resolution should consult the Society’s website for examples, suggestions, and the required resolution format. Please click on the following link for examples, including the format we would like you to use: https://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/pageid/1993/.

Exercise the Right to Vote

In the year of heated political debates and Presidential election, large voters’ turnout could restore democratic values and defend America from populism. Let us encourage students to value and exercise the right to vote.
