2012 C. Wright Mills Award
The 2012 C. Wright Mills Award Committee selected Dr. Cybelle Fox's book Three Worlds of Relief: Race, Immigration, and the American Welfare State from the Progressive Era to the New Deal, Princeton University Press.
Raymond J. Michalowski, chair of the 2012 C. Wright Mills Award Committee, said of Fox's work:
Three Worlds of Relief: Race, Immigration, and the American Welfare State from the Progressive Era to the New Deal by Cybil Fox breaks new ground in our understanding in the differentiation between the “deserving” and the “undeserving” poor in U.S. political history. By charting the intersections between race and citizenship during the period in which the outlines of the contemporary welfare state we forged, Fox provides valuable insight into contemporary conflicts over immigration and welfare policies. Three Worlds of Relief is a must read for anyone interested in understanding how states determine the operative meaning of both citizenship and race.
Congratulations, Dr. Fox!
