2013 C. Wright Mills Award
The 2013 C. Wright Mills Award Committee selected Dr. Nancy DiTomaso's book The American Non-Dilemma: Racial Inequality Without Racism, Russell Sage Foundation.
Dr. A. Antonio González-Prendes, chair of the 2013 C. Wright Mills Award Committee, said of DiTomaso's work:
"In The American Non-Dilemma: Racial Inequality without Racism Nancy DiTomaso asserts that “racial inequality still exists in the United States and most white Americans do not show evidence of experiencing a moral dilemma because of it.” DiTomaso has written a well-researched and thoughtful perspective into factors, beyond racism and discrimination, which contribute to ongoing racial inequality in the United Sates. DiTomaso’s interviews with 246 randomly selected whites provides the reader with an insightful look into how most white Americans fail to recognize how the dynamics of favoritism and the accumulation of social and cultural capital available to them have provided them with opportunities that otherwise might not have been available, and how that contributes to the maintenance of racial inequality. Individuals interested in gaining a deeper understanding of racial inequality in the United States will find DiTomaso’s book revealing and informative."
Congratulations, Dr. DiTomaso!
