Description:Description: The Sociology Department at Hobart and William Smith Colleges invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning July 1, 2027. Teaching responsibilities in a typical academic year include Introduction to Sociology, electives in the candidate’s area of expertise, and one of the core Sociology courses within the Sociology Program (either classical theory, research methods, statistics, or the senior capstone). In alternate years, the successful candidate will teach a core course in the Public Health program and occasionally a First-Year Seminar, in support of the Colleges’ general curriculum. The standard teaching load is 5 courses a year (a 2/3 load) along with student advising and department and institutional service. We seek candidates with a sociological approach to Public Health and candidates with expertise in classical sociological theory or quantitative methods are especially encouraged to apply. The Sociology department at Hobart and William Smith College is a change-oriented department with expertise in: Criminology, Education, Family, Gender, Race, Social Policy, Urban Life, and Victimology. Applicants should have a record of effective undergraduate teaching that emphasizes critical thinking and active learning. Candidates who incorporate community engagement into their courses are encouraged to describe their plans for continuing this work in the local Geneva, NY community. Candidates should demonstrate a promising research agenda. Areas of research interest include but are not limited to: health policy, healthcare systems, medical sociology, the social determinants of health, epidemiology, aging, occupational health, traditional health practices, and environmental public health. We encourage candidates to discuss whether/how they envision involving undergraduate students in their scholarly agenda. Scholarship at HWS is evaluated relative to a teacher-scholar model rooted in the mission of liberal arts education. Candidates with a Ph.D. by the time of appointment are preferred but ABD will be considered. While this position is housed within the Sociology Department and we prefer a Sociology Ph.D., candidates from sociology-adjacent fields that center a sociological approach are also encouraged to apply.

Description: Lewis & Clark College of Arts & Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in our new, interdisciplinary Data Science major. A Ph.D. or terminal degree is required at the time of appointment in Fall 2027. We seek a quantitative scholar with expertise in applying data science to substantive questions in one or more areas aligned with Lewis & Clark’s strategic priorities, including education, the environment, entrepreneurship, health, and law and public policy. The successful candidate will be prepared to teach introductory and intermediate data science courses, an advanced statistical modeling and inference course, and data-intensive coursework in their area of expertise. Previous experience teaching these courses is desirable. The Data Science program at Lewis & Clark combines rigorous training in statistics, computing, and data analysis with the broad perspective of a liberal arts education. Students learn to ask meaningful questions, work with real-world data, and communicate insights clearly while developing strong skills in programming, critical thinking, and ethical analysis. The program is intentionally interdisciplinary and centered on applied work, bringing together faculty from mathematics and natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The rapidly growing program currently serves more than 45 minors and a newly approved major guided by an interdisciplinary steering committee of faculty members. Distinctive activities include the Data Café, which offers nightly peer coding support in the library, an annual Data Science Hackathon, a faculty-led study abroad program in Berlin, and courses that partner with community organizations to apply data skills to real-world challenges. Description:Assistant Professor of Criminology Posting Details Position Information Working Title Assistant Professor of Criminology Appointment Type Full Time Purpose of Position The Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Criminology, effective August 2027. The successful candidate will join a vibrant department of 17 full-time faculty and 400 students dedicated to interdisciplinarity, collegiality, and community-engaged scholarship and education. We offer undergraduate majors in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, and Social Work and we are currently developing a Master’s of Science in Criminology (pending approval to begin in August 2027). We seek a broadly trained criminologist who will expand the ranks of our faculty and who will contribute to our rapidly growing criminology major and new Master’s program. The area of specialization for this position is open, but preference is given to candidates who could expand our current curriculum and/or contribute to areas of teaching need, including critical approaches to criminal justice systems and policy, and race and inequality. In addition to teaching courses in their area(s) of specialization, the successful candidate will also have teaching responsibilities in core criminology courses at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, which could include introduction to criminology, criminological theory, research methods, policy analysis and/or capstone courses. The nominal teaching load for tenure track appointments is 3-3. We seek a teacher-scholar who is committed to undergraduate education, who will engage with a diverse group of students in and out of the classroom, and who will pursue a robust research agenda in their area of expertise. A Ph.D. in Criminology, Sociology, or a closely related field is required for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. A J.D. alone is not sufficient for consideration. In some cases, exceptionally well-qualified candidates may be considered for appointment at a higher rank and ABD candidates who will not hold the Ph.D. by the time of appointment may be considered for appointment at the rank of Instructor. Salary Information: The salary for this position ranges from $78,000 to $88,000 commensurate with Education and Experience. Departmental Information The Department of Sociology, Social Work, and Anthropology at Christopher Newport University is composed of 17 faculty and offers majors in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, and Social Work, minors in Sociology, Anthropology, Criminology, and Geography, and an undergraduate certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). SSWA also houses two research centers: The Center for Crime, Equity, and Justice (CCEJ) and the Center for Education Research and Policy (CERP), each with robust public-facing and policy-oriented research agendas and extensive local and state-level relationships.
