Applicants must be 2026 SSSP members when applying for assistance. All applications must be submitted online no later than March 15, 2026. You may only apply to one travel fund. Applications not submitted online are ineligible for consideration.
Erwin O. Smigel Award Guidelines:
1) the Smigel Fund monies are to be used to pay for three or four unemployed or severely underemployed sociologists’ transportation to and registration fees for the SSSP annual meeting.
Note: Students must apply to the Lee Student Support Fund. A student is defined as someone who is currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral program at an institution of higher learning. International students must apply to the Lee Student Support Fund. Non-U.S. based international scholars from politically, economically, and culturally oppressed groups in countries not considered part of the Global South (as defined above) must apply to the Lee Scholar Support Fund. International scholars from the Global South as defined by the American Sociological Association must apply to the Transnational Initiatives Fund.
2) applicants must be current members who are presenting a paper at the main SSSP meeting (rather than at an adjacent workshop or meeting) or participating as a SSSP elected or appointed officer or committee member.
3) a maximum of $500 dollars is to be granted to any one recipient.
4) preference will be given to applicants who did not receive support from the Erwin O. Smigel Award in the previous year. Persons unable to attend the meetings must return all monies to SSSP.

Funding Information
The Board of Directors approved requiring those who receive travel fund awards to stay at the conference hotel, Westin New York at Times Square. SSSP will support a shared room only at the SSSP conference hotel (roommate matching service will be available). Our single/double room rate is $239 plus tax per night. Exceptions will be made if extraordinary personal circumstances justify an individual room.
Applicants will receive an e-mail confirming the receipt of their application. If you do not receive an e-mail within two weeks of submitting your application, please e-mail the chair Dr. Tracy L. Vargas. Applicants will be notified by the Administrative Officer if their application was accepted/rejected no later than May 15, 2026.
