Congratulations to the Thomas C. Hood Social Action Fundraiser Raffle Winner

Congratulations to Dr. Jean-Pierre Reed, Southern Illinois University, for winning the drawing for a two-night hotel stay at the Philadelphia 201 Hotel.  Purchasing a $5 raffle ticket to benefit the Thomas C. Hood Social Action Fund put his name in the drawing for this prize, plus the money always goes to an organization in the city hosting the annual meeting for its social justice work.  This year’s funding went to Mural Arts Philadelphia (https://www.muralarts.org/).

Announcing Release of SSSP Publication – Global Agenda for Social Justice

The Justice 21 Committee of the SSSP is pleased to announce the publication of the volume Global Agenda for Social Justice, which represents a continuing effort by our society to nourish a “public sociology” that will be easily accessible and useful to policy makers, academics, activists, concerned citizens, & students.  It is also a way to give something back to the people and institutions that support our scholarly endeavors.  We hope that you find it helpful in your challenging work of crafting successful solutions to contemporary social problems.

To access the Global Agenda for Social Justice, visit: https://www.sssp1.org/file/2018/Global_Agenda_for_Social_Justice.pdf.

Finally, please attend the book launch event taking place during the 2018 SSSP Meetings in Philadelphia.  All are invited to the event on Friday, August 10 from 7:00pm-8:30pm, held at Wooden Shoe Books (704 South Street).  Refreshments will be available.

2018 Proposed Resolutions

Resolutions constitute an important opportunity for our scholar-activist membership to analyze and opine on contemporary social problems that we believe the Society should address as a social justice organization.  All SSSP members are invited to review the proposed 2018 resolutions and participate in the resolutions process.

New resolution guidelines were adopted in order to promote and facilitate wider discussion prior to formal consideration at the 2018 Business Meeting [Saturday, August 11 from 4:15pm–5:25pm, Horizons Rooftop Ballroom].  To that end, please review the four proposed resolutions.  An open forum to discuss the proposed resolutions will be held on Friday, August 10, 2:30pm–4:10pm, Salon 10.  Possible modifications to the resolutions will be considered during the open discussion.  The revised (if any) resolutions will then be presented as a package for approval by the membership at the business meeting.

We would also like to remind individuals and divisions who submitted resolutions that if the action requires sending a letter or letters and/or e-mails, you will have to provide the names and addresses of the recipients and possibly be asked to assist in the drafting of the correspondence. Our thanks to everyone who submitted a resolution and to our members for giving them careful consideration.  If you have any questions regarding the proposed resolutions, please contact Vice-President David G. Embrick at david.embrick@uconn.edu.
