Special Election on SSSP Proposed Statements

SSSP is holding a special election regarding our organization’s endorsement of statements related to the ongoing tragic events happening in Palestine and Israel. This request is special, as it represents the first time in SSSP history where members have petitioned the Board of Directors (Board) to issue a statement outside of the annual resolutions cycle. Current SSSP members are being asked to cast votes related to two different statements to be issued by our organization, and to cast another vote that indicates preference for whether or not SSSP should issue a statement on this topic at all. The voting period will be two weeks, closing at 11:59pm (Eastern Time) on Wednesday, February 7. Learn more.

Membership & Outreach Committee: Jacqueline M. Zalewski

Our next Membership and Outreach Committee spotlight comes from Dr. Jacqueline M. Zalewski, West Chester University of Pennsylvania, who shares that the Department of Labor released a final rule on January 9, 2024 that changes the criteria for classifying independent contractors. This rule goes into effect on March 11, 2024 and rescinds the rule passed in January 2021. The past rule was based on two core factors for determining whether a worker is an employee or independent contractor (control over the work and opportunity for profit or loss), while the new rule includes six factors. In addition to the two factors in the past rule, the new rule includes: the amount of skill and initiative required for the work; the degree of permanence of the working relationship; the worker’s investment in equipment or materials required for the task; and the extent to which the service rendered is an integral part of the employer’s business.

Dr. Elroi Windsor will participate in a free, virtual Midwest Sociological Society Presidential Panel on "Amplifying the Pathway: Supporting a (More) Diverse Sociological (Thought) Leadership" on January 29 at 12:30 pm CT. 2024 Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate Fellowship – Application Deadline: 2/1/24

Apply for the 2024 Racial/Ethnic Minority Graduate Fellowship. Two students will be awarded a $15,000 fellowship with an additional $500 awarded for attendance at the SSSP 2024 Annual Meeting. Complete applications must be received no later than February 1, 2024.
