Description:

Brothers in Grief follows a Philadelphia school community—Boys’ Prep, an all-male charter high school serving Black boys—for one academic year, showing how its members responded to the tragic shooting deaths of three of its students. How do Black boys and those entrusted to care for them experience such loss? A combination of factors—among them stereotypes and restricted notions of racialized masculinity, the structural challenges of social class disadvantage, and how adults understand the capacity of young people to express their emotions—can limit how Black boys mourn and recover. The book is an example of deep and inquisitive ethnography, a model of self-reflexive scholarship, and a story that addresses a most difficult topic with the utmost care.
