Accessible New York City
This accessibility guide has details on getting around New York City by subway, bus, taxi, and more for those with disabilities and/or mobility devices.
Subway and Bus
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) operates New York City’s extensive subway and bus network. The subway system includes 24 lines serving Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx, with many lines operating 24 hours a day.
Subway stations and bus stops are located throughout the city, making public transportation one of the easiest ways to travel to and from Times Square and Midtown Manhattan.
Passengers can pay fares using OMNY contactless payment (tap with a credit/debit card, smartphone, or smartwatch) or by purchasing a MetroCard. OMNY is accepted on all subway and bus routes.
For schedules, service alerts, and maps, visit the MTA website or download the MYmta app for real-time subway and bus information.
Commuter Rail
New York City is also served by several regional commuter rail systems:
-
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) – connects Long Island to Penn Station and Grand Central
-
Metro-North Railroad – connects northern suburbs and Connecticut to Grand Central Terminal
-
NJ Transit – connects New Jersey communities to Penn Station
These systems provide convenient access to Manhattan from surrounding areas.

New York City’s iconic yellow taxis can be hailed throughout Manhattan and at designated taxi stands. All taxis accept credit cards and contactless payment.
