What Our Members Say
Has the SSSP made a lasting impact in your life? Consider submitting a testimony to be shared on our website by emailing sssp@utk.edu. Check out President Corey Dolgon’s testimony below and visit https://www.sssp1.org/index.cfm/m/576/locationSectionId/0/Member_Testimonials to hear from others.
“I first came to SSSP in 1997, through the Association for Humanist Sociology [AHS]. AHS was the group Betty and Al Lee built after leaving SSSP for becoming too much like ASA— ‘enmeshed deeply in the bureaucratic, technocratic, plutocratic, and imperialistic structure of our society.’ I felt then as I do now, that SSSP has the potential to be a radical professional base for people engaged in scholar activism. But we must support and challenge each other, work hard and reflect harder together, and stay committed, be vigilant and find joy with one another, if radical social change is our mission and sociology our method. I continue to ask the same question the Lees did back in 1954: can sociology ‘be the brash, young, vital, productive, unsettling, even revolutionary pursuit it has been in its most valuable periods?’”

2020 Approved Resolutions
Resolutions were solicited via several calls sent out to the membership by the SSSP Administrative Office as well as by emails sent to the Chairs of the 23 Divisions by the SSSP Vice-President and Chair of the Committee on Social Action, Daina Cheyenne Harvey. This year, three proposed resolutions were submitted, including the expression of gratitude.
The resolutions were provided online for the membership to review and comment on prior to the Society’s Virtual Annual Business Meeting on Friday, August 7, 2020. Immediately following the meeting, current members were able to vote online for or against each resolution or abstain. The voting period lasted two weeks.
Thank you to those who voted. 410 votes were cast. Resolutions 1 and 2 passed overwhelmingly, but resolution 3 did not pass. Per the Society’s By-Laws, a resolution passes if two-thirds of the members voting online by the deadline, vote in favor of the resolution.
