Call for Resolutions Deadline–April 30
Members who wish to propose resolutions for consideration, should submit them to the SSSP Vice-President Pamela Anne Quiroz at paquiroz@uh.edu by April 30, 2021. For detailed information on the resolution process, please click here.
All proposed resolutions with the exception of those expressing thanks should contain a concise position statement concerning a social problem of urgent concern and the appropriate evidence and citations to support the position taken in the resolution. In most cases, the proposed resolution should include some sort of call for viable action on the part of the SSSP. This typically has involved a letter from the BOD directed to some public or private entity expressing concern, support, or opposition. Other forms of appropriate action may be proposed, but ideally any other forms of action should be discussed in advance with the Vice-President prior to submitting the proposed resolution. If the proposed resolution is in support of or in opposition to a piece of legislation, a copy of the legislation or a place where members can access it must be provided. Likewise, if the proposal is in support of or in opposition to an existing statement by another organization, a copy of that statement or a place where members can access it must be provided. Members who want to propose a resolution should consult the Society’s website for examples, suggestions, and the required resolution format. Please click here for examples, including the format we would like you to use.

How Little Miss Flint is Still Making a Difference in her Community, 5 Years into Water Crisis
As higher exposure rates to air pollution and as landfills and hazardous waste sites are often built in communities of color; the voices that need to be amplified when advocating for climate change are those that belong to the people who are the most affected by it.
The SSSP proudly supports voices like Mari Copeny, also known as “Little Miss Flint,” and others calling for action on the clean water and air crisis.

2021 SSSP’s Anti-Asian Hate, Discrimination, and Violence Statement
The Board of Directors of the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) has written a statement condemning the rise in anti-Asian racism in the United States, expressing solidarity with Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI), and sharing its grief with those impacted by the subsequent racial violence. The statement also calls attention to the fact that this brutal act targeted Asian American women principally; a group targeted historically by racial and gender violence accompanying colonial and cultural conquests, and by what Asian-American feminists have called the “everyday experiences of sexual violence” among Asian American and Pacific Islander [AAPI] community women. The statement was sent to prominent AAPI social justice organizations, Congressional leaders, the leaders of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, and the White House. Click below to read the statement and sample cover letters. Provided as well is a link to resources for members who wish to get more involved on this issue.
